How to write higher modern studies essays

Essentially you must explain in detail the issue identified, for example: Analyse the opportunities that exist for people to influence decision making. You need to explain what those opportunities are, give examples and say how effective they are. How are 12 mark essays marked?

Different Modern Studies teachers will give different advice on how to write 20 mark essays, but most would agree that the following is good practice: An introduction is not compulsory and does not necessarily gain any marks but it can help you set out the structure of your essay and identify what factors and issues you are going to write about.

When writing essays, most people merely give a description of the question. For example, in the practice question, most students would describe what occurred on the Eastern Front as opposed to analysing the impacts which it had on the war.

Never EVER write in first person - this is the cardinal sin of modern essay writing. Markers hate this and you will lose marks if you use first person. Also, always use formal language and avoid colloquialisms. Whilst most people know this, some colloquialisms are difficult to pick up on.
